As we reflect on the CEO breakfast series that began in 2024 and consider the current national conversations around diversity, equity, and inclusion (DEI), we are witnessing an evolving landscape – almost day by day. Yes, this rapidly changing environment is challenging, but at the same time, it offers a unique opportunity for bold leadership. Collectively, we can uphold the core value of inclusion among our diverse clients, customers, and employees.
Many CEOs in the Lehigh Valley and nationwide are navigating the tension between advancing DEI initiatives and facing political, legal, and cultural pushbacks. A range of recently endorsed executive orders have placed extraordinary pressures on leaders to decide how their organizations will respond while still fostering a workplace culture that is inclusive—because, at the end of the day, it is our people that make our work successful.
Our breakfast series has become an essential forum for many of the region’s top leaders to engage in what many call “difficult conversations” related to one of the most hotly debated topics in our society. These conversations are about how organizations will carry out those values within a supportive network of leaders from various industries. Among the leaders who participate in LINC, the commitment to inclusion, embracing diversity, and welcoming all clients, customers, and employees is unequivocal.
An influential Lehigh Valley CEO shared a personal story about his formative years in a diverse international community, where his closest friend was from a different racial background. Those early experiences, he said, taught him the value of diversity—lessons that have stayed with him ever since. This deep personal connection to diversity isn’t just a part of who he is; it’s woven into the fabric of his company, shaping its commitment to creating an inclusive workplace.
I am personally grateful for the collaboration of LINC where leaders from across different industries can be in regular dialogue about how to navigate these challenges effectively and share strategies that prioritize the well-being and growth of our teams. This forum has become a vital resource, providing us with the opportunity to learn from each other’s experiences and insights, ensuring we are better equipped to lead our organizations through these complex times.
As we continue these discussions, let’s continue to draw inspiration from our diverse backgrounds, perspectives, and personal stories that reinforce our commitment to creating inclusive workplace cultures. Together, we are setting a standard for what it means to lead a geographic region with integrity and inclusivity in today’s challenging and diverse landscape.
